OTTAWA VIA STATION

viatrain2_0.pngThe downtown eLRT could be extended from Hurdman to the VIA train station.

This extension could be done using the transitway to the existing train transitway station or with a platform at the West end of the VIA station beside the existing VIA train platform.

This would provide for cross-platform transfers from arriving VIA trains. Later the line could be extended to parts further East, as envisioned by the Rapid Transit Expansion Study. (cf Blackburn Hamlet extension, to be documented)

This extension would also provide for transfers to/from dLRT extension from Confederation to Cyrville. In addition, this extension makes it possible to use
some of the train lands (were they still for sale), for a maintenance yard.

The extension from Hurdman to VIA station could be done for $38M. This extension is expensive, because it would share right of way with the transitway, which
involves the most expensive kind of new track: the road friendly kind.

Consideration was made to putting the eLRT line in front of the VIA station,
in the transitway trench. Doing so would permit electric extension along
the eastern transitway, replacing the buses in that direction. However, Friends of the O-Train does not see a reason to spend what would be a very large amount of money duplicating the bus service that already exists. Instead, we would extend diesel LRT to Cyrville, and eventually to southern Orleans, at much lower cost.
